That was the unimaginable experience of Nora Shipton and her husband, Rob White, after she gave birth to two sets of identical twins — quadruplets — on Dec. 22, 2006 at The Ottawa Hospital. The four boys, “micro-preemies” weighing less than two pounds, were delivered by caesarean section at 26 weeks. It meant their lungs, hearts and immune systems weren’t fully developed. One boy from each set of twins survived; one boy from each set of twins died. Read more here
The news of having twins is a blessing and having triplets is a rare possibility. But to have quadruplets living inside you is shocking. This is probably the feeling of Nora Shipton in 2006 when she learned about her condition. Fast forward, due to complications, only two of the quadruplets survived. Now 12 years old, the twins together with their parents have ben very active in raising funds to help other babies who are in the same situation. CDC has estimated one in every 1,000 births results in having multiple babies in a single pregnancy. Although the idea of twins, triplets or quadruplets may excite parents, the health risks associated should not be discounted.
